The World Butchers' Challenge is the pinnacle of international butchery competition, bringing together the world's finest national teams to compete for the sport's highest honour.

More than a test of technical skill, the World Butchers' Challenge celebrates teamwork, innovation, craftsmanship and national pride. Every four years, elite teams transform premium proteins into world-class retail displays under the watchful eye of an international judging panel.

Representing your country is one of the greatest achievements in the profession. Earning the title of World Butchers' Challenge Champion places your team among the very best butchers in the world.


About the Competition

Where National Pride Meets World-Class Butchery.


The World Butchers' Challenge is contested by officially recognised national teams from around the globe.

Over 3 hours and 30 minutes, teams work together to transform a side of beef, side of pork, whole lamb and five chickens into an exceptional retail display that showcases technical excellence, innovation, commercial value and teamwork.

Competition success is determined across multiple judging categories, including:

  • Team Work (15%)

  • Technical Skills (20%)

  • Finishing – Product (25%)

  • Finishing – Display (20%)

  • Carcass Utilisation (10%)

  • Yield & Value Maximisation (10%)


Eligibility

To compete in the World Butchers' Challenge, teams must:

  • Be officially recognised as their country's national team.

  • Be selected through their country's recognised industry body or official selection process.

  • Meet all eligibility requirements established by their national organisers.

  • Compete as a team of up to six members, with reserve competitors encouraged where applicable.


Team Structure

Each national team consists of up to six competitors, working together across specialised roles throughout the competition.

While teams have complete flexibility in how they allocate responsibilities, a typical structure includes:

  • Breaking & Boning

  • Trimming & Slicing

  • Value Adding & Finishing

  • Garnishing & Display Organisation

Every team also appoints a Team Captain, who acts as the official liaison between the judges and event organisers.


Competition Format

HOW IT WORKS

Each team receives:

  • Side of Beef

  • Side of Pork

  • Whole Lamb

  • Five Whole Chickens

Teams have 3 hours and 30 minutes to break down the proteins, create innovative retail-ready products and build a themed display that reflects the highest international standards of butchery.

Entry Fees & Deadlines

ENTRY FEE

Per team: AUD $15,000

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

To confirm your place in the 2028 World Butchers’ Challenge, entry fees are payable in three instalments across the lead-up to the event.

  • 25% deposit due by 31 September 2026

  • 50% instalment due by December 31 2026

  • Final 25% balance due by 31 July 2027

Important: Entry is only confirmed once the initial 25% deposit has been received.
