The World Butchers’ Challenge brings national teams together to represent their country and transform whole cuts into a retail display that needs to look incredible, demonstrate genuine technical skill and still make commercial sense.
It is not simply about cutting quickly or producing something beautiful enough to impress the judges. The products have to feel current and purposeful. They need to look like something a customer would actually want to cook and talk about afterwards.
There is theatre in the competition, of course, but there is substance behind it. Building a national team takes commitment, planning and a surprising number of people prepared to spend evenings, weekends and possibly several years of their lives debating garnish.
For some countries, that is exactly the right place to begin. For others, it may be where the journey eventually leads rather than where it starts.
The Next Gen Are Not Waiting Their Turn
The World Champion Young Butcher and World Champion Butcher Apprentice competitions give emerging butchers their own opportunity to compete internationally.
These are not warm-up events or polite side competitions designed to keep the younger crowd occupied while the main event happens elsewhere. They are world-title competitions in their own right, created for the people coming through the industry now.
They are for the apprentices with frighteningly good knife skills, the young butchers saving product ideas to their camera rolls at 1 am and the people who care deeply about the craft while still being willing to question how things have always been done.
A country can enter one or both of these competitions alongside its main WBC team. Competitors may come from within the wider national delegation, or they may be selected specifically for the individual events.
They do not need to wait until someone decides they have finally “done their time”. If the talent is there, put it on the world stage.

The World Sausage Awards may be the most accessible route into WBC 2028.
You do not need to assemble an entire national team first, but you do need a sausage worth talking about.
It might be based on a family recipe that has survived several generations and countless unsolicited opinions. It might be the result of months of careful testing, or a slightly unhinged flavour idea that should not have worked but somehow became the best thing in the cabinet.
It could be deeply traditional, completely modern or unmistakably tied to the place you come from. That is exactly what makes the competition interesting.
Every butcher shop has a sausage customers return for. Every country has flavours that feel familiar before you have even finished the first bite. Every sausage maker knows the particular satisfaction of getting the seasoning, texture and snap exactly right.
The question is whether yours is good enough to stand beside the best in the world.
The World Sausage Awards create a direct pathway into WBC 2028 for butchers and countries that may not yet be ready to send a full national team, but still have something exceptional to put forward.
It may be a smaller entry point, but it is not a smaller achievement.
One product can say a lot about the person who made it, the skills behind it and the place it comes from. It can carry years of experience and a story people remember.

Enter Your Way
A country does not have to enter every WBC 2028 competition.
It may send a team to the World Butchers’ Challenge, enter a young butcher or apprentice, compete in the World Sausage Awards or build a delegation across all of them. There is no single approved route and no requirement to arrive with every piece already in place.
Your country may already have an established national team ready to go all in. There may be an apprentice in your business who deserves a much bigger opportunity than the one currently in front of them. The first step may simply be entering the sausage that sells out every Saturday and triggers mild panic whenever you suggest taking it off the range.
Start there.
The world stage does not belong only to the biggest teams or the countries with the longest competition history. It belongs to the people making exceptional things and being brave enough to put them forward.
In 2028, that could mean standing behind a show-stopping display as part of a national team.
It could also mean looking down at one sausage and realising the whole thing has escalated quite beautifully.
